In 1922, the Office of Indian Affairs (now BIA) issued Circular 1774 requiring all Indian agents to survey the agricultural industries of families living within agency jurisdictions. The records provide a snapshot of everyday life in Indian Country, including glimpses into agriculture and ranching, education, family life, kinship, religious practices, and resistance. This is an early version of that survey, conducted at Susan Bearskin's home, ca. 1924.

Mrs. Bearskin lives on her allotment, comprising eighty acres of land; sixty in a creek bottom and in cultivation. A married son lives with Mrs. Bearskin, and she has a single daughter who contributes to her support. This allottee has been a very industrious woman and is honest. The rents off of her own land and that of her husband almost kept her. Mrs. Bearskin owns a team, wagon, harness, farm implements, a cow and calf and some chickens. She put up considerable fruit this year and lives in a comfortable but in-expensive home. The only aid the government can render in this case is to see that the lands of this citizen are kept rented and the rents delivered to her.
