1841 "Statement of the Case"
Summary:
1841 "Statement of the Case" by William Walker Jr.Description:
By the Treaty of Maumee held in 1817, the Wyandotts were granted a reservation at Upper Sandusky that was twelve miles square. By the Treaty of St. Mary's in 1818, an additional reservation of fifty-five thousand acres was granted to the Wyandotts. In addition, tribe members receive a perpetual annuity of $6,900 from this Treaty. Many of these Wyandotts have since died, but they have left behind debts that are unpaid. Walker Jr. wonders if the death of a recipient of an annuity should keep his creditors from the benefit of that annuity if it was pledged as payment for the debts. Walker notes at the end of the manuscript that he has written this "on behalf of the creditors." (2 similar copies)
