Journal of Abelard Guthrie from August 19 - December 31, 1858
Journal of Abelard Guthrie from August 19 - December 31, 1858. The journal discusses Quindaro affairs, purchasing various items, establishing roads near Guthrie's farm, contemplating the "false dealings of Robinson and his confederates," numerous financial troubles, issues with a lath machine at Quindaro, the first election for township officers in Quindaro Township, attending the Freestate county convention as a delegate from Quindaro, health problems, issues with the Parkville and Quindaro ferry, borrowing money, meeting with Matthew R. Walker concerning a trip to Washington D. C., and various other matters. In the final entry on December 31, 1858, Guthrie writes that the "year now closing has been the most painful and gloomy of my whole existence, produced solely by my association in business with dishonest, dishonorable, heartless men, and the unsettled condition of our business casts a prospective gloom of the incoming year."
